What to Wear to your Senior Session
From a senior portrait photographer who wants you looking timeless, confident, and effortlessly beautiful. Here is the best guide to make sure you look amazing in your senior pictures.
Your senior photos should feel like you on your best day—not trendy, not overdone, and definitely not something you’ll cringe at in ten years. After photographing seniors for the last 3 years, I can confidently say: what you wear matters just as much as the location and the light.
Here’s exactly how to choose outfits that photograph flawlessly.
Keep It Timeless With the Right Colors
Brooklyn at Enchanted Gardens - class of 2023.
Color choice is everything. The goal is to complement your skin tone, match the vibe of your location and let you be the focus—not your outfit.
Best colors for senior portraits:
White
Cream / ivory
Beige / tan
Camel
Olive
Soft gray
Black
Denim blue
Blush
Dusty blue
Soft sage
Maroon or red
Navy
Chocolate Brown
These tones photograph beautifully, reflect light well, and never go out of style.
Colors to avoid:
Mallory in a classic little black dress that complimented her perfectly! Location: The Grand Galvez.
Neon or super bright colors
Loud reds or oranges (go for deeper shades, or muted)
Tiny stripes or busy patterns
Large logos or graphics
Hazen is attending Texas A&M - so maroon was the perfect choice for her pictures.
If it’s distracting in person, it’ll be even louder on camera.
Layers Are Your Secret Weapon
Layers instantly elevate your look and give your gallery variety without needing a full outfit change.
A denim on denim look never goes out of style.
Think:
Denim jacket
Cozy cardigan
Light blazer
Overshirt
Scarf for fall sessions
Layers add depth, texture, and movement—three things photographers absolutely love.
Fit Matters More Than Trends
You can never go wrong with a romper that fits you properly.
The best outfit in the world won’t photograph well if it doesn’t fit correctly.
Look for:
Jeans or pants that fit snugly but comfortably
Dresses that flow when you walk or spin
Tops that skim your body without clinging
Avoid anything overly baggy or uncomfortably tight. You should feel confident enough to move, sit, laugh, and pose naturally.
Texture = Editorial-Level Photos
Texture makes photos feel soft, elevated, and high-end.
Great fabric choices include:
Knit sweaters
Linen
Denim
Soft leather details
Chiffon or flowy cotton
Flat, shiny fabrics tend to photograph harshly. Soft textures create dimension and depth on camera.
Avoid Satin!
Shoes Complete the Look
Yes—shoes matter, even if you think they won’t show.
Safe, photo-friendly options:
Clean white or neutral sneakers
Ankle boots or cowgirl boots
Neutral heels
Simple flats or sandals
Avoid overly bright colors, chunky athletic shoes (unless it fits the vibe!), or anything scuffed and worn down.
Bring At Least Two Outfits
Mackenzie at Katy Heritage Park - If you have a letterman, bring it!!
I always recommend planning for two looks:
Outfit One:
Classic, polished, timeless.
Think neutrals, clean lines, and something mom will frame.
My personal favorite is a little flowy white dress.
Outfit Two:
Relaxed, fun, and very you.
A little personality, movement, and confidence.
This gives your gallery balance and makes your session feel dynamic.
Final Photographer Tip
If you think you might regret it in ten years… don’t wear it.
Senior portraits are about capturing who you are in this moment—beautiful, confident, and ready for what’s next. The right outfit lets that shine through effortlessly.
If you’d like help styling your session, send over the season, location, and vibe, and I’ll help you plan outfits that photograph perfectly from head to toe.
